Add captions to video

Add captions to your video

Lots of people watch short videos with the sound off, so captions often decide whether they keep watching. Clipumo lets you write captions yourself or import a subtitle file, then burns them into the exported video so they show on every app and player.

Your video and captions are processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Clipumo's caption step with the Minimal, Bold and Creator styles and the caption editor.

Two ways to add captions (or skip)

  • Write captions by hand: best for short clips or when you don't have a transcript.
  • Import an .srt or .vtt file: best when your recording or transcription tool already made one.
  • Skip captions: a normal option, not an error. You can come back and add them later.

Writing captions by hand

  1. 1In the Captions step, choose “Write captions”.
  2. 2Play the clip and pause where someone starts speaking.
  3. 3Type the caption. Start and end times are pre-filled from the playhead; adjust them or press “Start at playhead” / “End at playhead”.
  4. 4Press Enter or “Add caption”. Shift + Enter adds a line break. The next caption starts where the last one ended.
  5. 5Edit or delete any caption in the list. Times are checked so captions always stay inside your clip.

Caption styles

  • Minimal: clean white text on a soft dark box.
  • Bold: heavy white text with a black outline, readable on any footage.
  • Creator: big uppercase yellow text in the middle of the frame, the classic short-form look.

Tips for readable captions

  • Keep each caption to one or two short lines.
  • Split long sentences into several captions.
  • On vertical video, Clipumo keeps captions clear of the bottom of the frame, where apps put their own buttons and text.

Questions

Does Clipumo create captions automatically?

No. There's no automatic transcription. Type captions yourself, or import a subtitle file you already have.

Can I edit imported captions?

Imported captions are shown as they are in the file. To change them, edit the file in any text editor and import it again, or write captions by hand instead.

Are the captions burned in?

Yes. They're drawn into the video picture, so they appear on every platform without viewers turning anything on.
